Athlete : Rio Haryanto

 


   Who is Rio Haryanto? is an Indonesian car racer and entrepreneur. He most recently competed in the 2019-20 Asian Le Mans Series and Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia for the T2 Motorsports team. 

  He once raced in Formula One with the Manor Racing team in the 2016 season. Rio is the first Indonesian racer in history to race at the GP2 Series level. He is also the first Indonesian racer in history to try out a Formula One car. Until the 2022 season, he will be the only Indonesian racer competing in Formula One. 

   In 2014, Haryanto earned a business degree from Anglia Ruskin University, studying at their Singaporean campus. At the beginning of 2017, he entered the business field as he was assigned by his father to oversee the security printing division at his family's printing company Kiky. 

  During Haryanto's Formula One career, Kiky were involved in a lawsuit over copyright infringement with Spanish cartoonist Adaco as they were claimed to have used Adacos' works in their printing without permission. Haryanto is well known for owning Grandis Barn Restaurant in Surakarta, and Teakyard Restaurant in Colomadu, Central Java
   
   He was born on 22th January 1993 Surakarta, Central Java, which makes him 30 years old now, Rio started his career in go-kart racing in 2002 as the National Go-kart Champion in the cadet class. His single seater racing career only started in 2008, when he took part in the Formula Renault Asia event.  

  Rio succeeded in becoming the champion of the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific season and had the opportunity to appear in the European Formula BMW event as a guest racer in the Monza series. In the race, which was also attended by a racer from Brazil, namely Felipe Nasr (who would later become his opponent in Formula) Rio failed to finish in the first race and finished 17th in the second race.

  Rio started his career on the European continent by competing in the GP3 Series for the Marussia Manor Racing team in 2010. He was able to win the race in Istanbul and was ranked 5th at the end of the standings. In 2011, Rio settled in the GP3 Series with the Marussia Manor Racing team. At the end of the season, he recorded 7th position in the final standings of the GP3 Series, with 2 wins at the Nürburgring and Hungaroring.
